Funding Options

Making any adaptations to your home can be costly but there is financial help available to help with not only the costs of products and installations but also ongoing care too.

Disabled Facilities Grants

The Disabled Facilities Grants can help towards the costs of making home improvements and adaptations for a person with a disability, as long as you’re the owner occupier, landlord or private tenant.

A Disabled Facilities Grant can be used for various adaptations around the house including improving access to your bathroom, and the installation of facilities to make bathing easier as long as any improvements are recommended by your local occupational health therapist and you could be eligible for up to £25,000 depending on your circumstances.

For more information, contact your local health authority and social services trust, your GP should also be able to offer advice too

If you need ongoing help and support with personal care, there are a few options which you might be eligible to apply for:

Disability Living Allowance

If you do struggle to look after yourself, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) helps with the personal care of children or adults (under the age of 65) who have mobility difficulties due to physical or mental disabilities or who have difficulties with personal care, or both.

Disability Living Allowance is available whether or not you work and isn’t normally affected by your income or any savings but it can have an impact on any other benefits you receive such as income support, housing benefits etc.

Attendance Allowance

If you’re over 65 you won’t be able to claim Disability Living Allowance, but you may be entitled to Attendance Allowance, if you need some assistance with your personal care due to a physical or mental disability.  Attendance Allowance is also unaffected by your income and savings.
